How It Works
Different formulas were developed for different populations and purposes:
- Devine (1974): Originally for medication dosing. Most commonly cited in medicine.
- Robinson (1983): Updated Devine formula with more recent data.
- Miller (1983): Based on Metropolitan Life Insurance tables.
- Hamwi (1964): Simple rule of thumb. 48kg for 5ft men + 2.7kg per inch. 45.5kg for 5ft women + 2.2kg per inch.
All of these ignore body composition. A muscular person can be "overweight" by every formula and still be healthy.
